You want to be a better writer.
We love that idea. We think you’d enjoy a few line-editing lessons.
Line Editing Lessons
Collaborative Editing Sessions
$300 – $1,200
Line editing can be thought of as deep copyediting. Whereas copyediting aims to make a piece of writing clear, correct, and consistent, line editing goes deeper, seeking to improve flow, rhythm, style, and structure. This is where the magic happens and your writing improves.
If you’d like to explore the possibilities for improving your writing at the sentence and paragraph level, this is a great way to learn. There’s no need to have a complete draft or to be anywhere near making a plan for publication. All you need is a desire to deepen your understanding of how your words are working on the page.
3 Lessons: $300
6 Lessons $600
9 Lessons: $900

Our Approach to Line Editing
Our approach to line editing has changed significantly over the years. For a long time, we strove to provide a deep-cleaned deliverable that simultaneously retained the writer’s voice and strengthened their writing. We still believe that’s a worthy endeavor, and we know that it takes equal measures of instinct, empathy, experience, and diplomacy. But these days, we’d rather teach you how to do it yourself.
Our line editing sessions create space for explorative conversations about what’s happening on the sentence level in your work. What would happen if you broke the line here, rather than there? What is this word really getting at? Is it effective to use imprecise language here? Did you mean to use variations of this verb three dozen times in your story?
What would happen if you ended the paragraph here?
What is this word trying to do?
Would this character really say this?
Our Line-Editing Sessions
We’ll begin our collaboration with a conversation about your approach to writing and reading and discuss your writing goals and concerns. By the end of the call, you’ll have your first three sessions on the calendar and clear goals for your first submission.
For every session, you’ll send your editor around 5 pages, or 1,250 words. At the scheduled time, you’ll meet online in a Zoom session. (No need to be camera-ready — we just need Zoom’s screen-sharing capabilities. We’re happy to work in Google Docs instead, if you prefer.)
You and your editor will read your pages aloud and begin experimenting with revisions in real time, discussing the reasons for each change and the ramifications of each potential solution. You’ll no doubt end up talking about the difference between grammar rules and style rules at some point, and about poetic license, voice, point of view, and target readers. At the end of each session, you’ll identify your goals for revision and make sure your next three sessions are on the calendar.
There’s never a penalty for rescheduling a session, and your unused sessions never expire, but they can’t be applied to other editing services.
If you’re interested in learning how to edit your own work more effectively and efficiently, let’s talk. Line-editing lessons will help you streamline your process and deepen your understanding of your craft.

“When we are young, the words are scattered all around us. As they are assembled by experience, so also are we, sentence by sentence, until the story takes shape.”
– Louise Erdrich, THE PLAGUE OF DOVES
