I love the St. Louis Writers Guild!

More than 50 people showed up for my seminar, Novel Revision 101: DIY & Collaborative Revision, yesterday morning. I haven’t had that kind of showing since the Houston Writers Guild’s Annual Conference in 2012 — also a fantastic group. That class is always a hit, and I’m thinking maybe I should take the show on the road . . . a new chapter of the Missouri Writers Guild just started in Hannibal, and it’s been a while since I’ve explored that stretch of the Mississippi River. Stay tuned.

Here’s what’s coming up if you want to catch me in pants I mean in person:

ShowMe Writers Masterclass Mini series

Exposition Exposed + Prioritizing Point of View

March 17, 12:00-4:00 p.m.
Columbia, MO
MU Student Center, KC & St. Louis Room
$25

I had the honor of mentoring authors at the ShowMe Writers Masterclass Conference in October 2017 and am thrilled to be presenting two of my editing workshops back to back for their first MasterClass Mini next month. I’ll teach Exposition Exposed and Prioritizing Point of View — details follow:

Exposition Exposed

Learn once and for all the difference between showing and telling so you can find and fix the flabby parts of your writing. In the first half of class, we’ll define terms, look at examples, and analyze what works and what doesn’t. In the second half, we’ll workshop a work in progress and make it lean & strong.

Prioritizing Point of View

Learn why perspective is everything. In the first half of class, we’ll discuss the different POVs—first, second, and third-person, unlimited and omniscient, and multiple—and how they govern storytelling. In the second half, we’ll critique and revise passages together.
